Post 2224 History

In the early 1930s, the great depression was starting it’s strangling hold on the local communities(s). Combat veterans from the Spanish American War and WWI veterans wanted to stick together during this rough recovery time and help one another, their families and the families of their fallen comrades. They started the VFW – Veterans of Foreign Wars. There were many good reasons to form and support the VFW, preventing the break-up of Families of Veterans and lobbying for Veteran benefits which were almost non-existent at the time. Since 1931 the Puyallup VFW #2224 has not turned its back on needy comrades and their families.

Today the Puyallup VFW a non-profit (501c19) continues to assist Veterans and their families in the Puyallup area.  We fund several programs that cover the diverse needs of Active Duty, Military Reserves, and Veterans that live in this community.

  • We identify needs and our Veteran relief fund gives grants to qualifying Service members or Veterans and their families experiencing financial hardship.
  • Providing Service Officers that are experts in filing VA claims for no cost to the Veteran.
  • Provide farewell and welcome home gatherings for Military units and Vietnam Veterans who never got a welcome home.
  • Flags and Flag education/etiquette are important elements of our citizenship education program.
  • Instilling, developing and fostering of patriotism and honoring America’s Veterans on Patriotic Days: Memorial Day, Loyalty Day, Veterans Day and POW/MIA Day.

Constructive community service is the founding Puyallup VFW tenet with volunteerism benefiting education, the environment, health sciences and civic projects like Veterans Park and the “War memorial”. The Puyallup VFW citizen education program is designed to stimulate interest in American History, its traditions, and institutions, as well as promote patriotism. The Puyallup VFW partners with Boy & Girl Scouts of America, Rogers HS JROTC, Puyallup Service clubs, St Francis House, just to mention a few organizations.

The Citizen Education program arms, teachers with school activities and resources designed to teach America’s youth about patriotism and service and about contributions of our Nation’s veterans in perusing peace.

Puyallup VFW Scholarship Programs include the Voice of Democracy, Patriots Pen, and the Puyallup VFW Military Family Scholarship.  Every year Puyallup Students participate in these events obtaining scholarships and other incentives.

The Puyallup VFW is looking to expand on these programs in a big way. Our Scholarship programs are funded by post members donations and small fundraisers.  The state winner is going to Washington D.C. to compete on the National level. This program is designed to attract very talented and patriotic students. This VFW program has been around for many decades and future leaders like, State Senator Hans Zeiger won the Puyallup VFW Voice of Democracy several years ago.

The Puyallup VFW has been a beacon of leadership in the Puyallup Community with a resurgence of new members helping and volunteering every day. We have volunteers at the Orting Soldiers home, VA hospitals with many using their vehicles to pick elderly Veterans from their home to make their appointments. The new Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans are a great resource of the VFW team often thinking, “out of the box” on solutions to help veterans.

The Puyallup VFW is currently looking for partners who have the same vision and drive to help Military families and Veterans, to expand on the Citizen Education programs through the Puyallup VFW.  We know the ever-evolving needs of the Puyallup Veterans and their Families. We are in the trenches every day striving and driving to helping our fellow veterans.

The Puyallup VFW is jumping into the trenches again, upholding the values that formed Post #2224 in 1931.  Helping veterans and their families and expanding the Citizen Educational Programs.  We know the needs, we ask for your help partnering to “Get It Done.”
